On May 4th (2pm), NHCCC, with the generous support from CTHumanities, is hosting “Stories from the North,” a program centered around musical traditions of Northern China and beyond, including those of Shanxi, Shandong, Beijing, Anhui, Shaanbei, to name a few. Register now! Unlike the Silk and Bamboo Tradition of Jiangnan, which we presented in December, the styles of these northern reaches can be described as unpretentious, heartfelt, lively, highly rhythmic, and at times raucous. Members of NHCCC will act as storytellers to make the program accessible to those who are new to traditional Chinese music. You will hear the small drum (板鼓 bǎngǔ) in a tune inspired by the Peking opera (京調 jīngdiào), our bow-string section in a heart-wrenching programatic song about star-crossed lovers (蘭花花 lánhuāhuā), and Flower Drum of Fengyang (鳳陽花鼓 fèngyáng huāgǔ), which is a popular and highly syncopated folk song from Anhui. These are only a small sampling of the exciting event!
